The River Sharks play Minor League ball in Camden. Cross the Delaware River to Campbell’s Field, next to the Aquarium. It’s fun. Probably the only ballpark in the country where one of the snacks available is soup. Might be because Campbell’s Field is named for Campbell’s Soup, a local institution.
There are private, public, and school sculling events throughout the year. Boathouse Row, Kelly Drive, along the Schuykill River. Note: Many of the regattas result in a minor detour off Kelly Drive into Fairmount Park for a few blocks. Full schedule at BoathouseRow.org

Fairmount Park is the largest urban park in the United States, though, unlike Central Park, it’s actually on the west edge of town, separating Center City from the suburbs. Great for hikes, dog walks, off-road biking, and more. West River Drive runs along the edge of the park, as does the Philadelphia Zoo, the Dell East, and the Mann Music Center. There are tours of Colonial mansions within park grounds. That huge green dome visible from the expressway is Memorial Hall, the centerpiece of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition and the only building left from that event. It’s the future home of the Please Touch Museum. (For more on the Centennial, visit the Atwater Kent Museum or the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.)
Walk, jog, bike, fish, play basketball, walk your ferret, have a picnic. It starts up in East Falls, behind the Art Museum, and runs for miles along the Schuylkill River. And now the path has been extended down to South Street. (Closed to auto traffic during regattas and the US Pro Championship Cycling Race.)
You can also find equally nice paths along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (formerly West River Drive), on the other side of the river, plus King Drive is closed to traffic and open to everyone on foot every Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm, April through October.

The only legal spot to skateboard outdoors in Philadelphia is at the setup in Roosevelt Park. It’s at the far end of the park, tucked under the highway overpass. It’s a good space, large, very popular with skateboarders. You can see some skilled people here. (Some get a bit impatient with slow young novices, mainly because they’re afraid they’ll run them over. Bring a helmet and kneepads.) Roosevelt Park, Broad and Pattison Sts. Opposite the First Union Complex. Open dawn to dusk daily.
Skateboarding outdoors anywhere else in Philadelphia is illegal and carries a $300 fine. Love Park has been renovated, specifically to block skateboarding.
