Free Library of Philadelphia

1901 Vine St.. 215/686-5322.
Once upon a time, people gathered information into bits of paper, and then stored these bits of paper in buildings known and libraries. Things have gotten a bit vague since then, but libraries are coming back in a big way, as architects and librarians meet the new possibilities. The central library branch of the Philadelphia system is a magnificent example of a classic 19th century building moving into the 21st. Among the computers and the book stacks you can find odd items such as the raven, once the pet of Charles Dickens’ little girls, that has been stuffed and mounted. Legend has it that a book critic hated Dickens so much he wrote a poem about the raven. History does not record what Mr. Dickens thought of Mr. Poe’s efforts.
There is a regular schedule of lectures, films, music, Children and Adult workshops, and Author Events.
